Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

Here are some wedding dress shopping tips for you! I’m sure you are one of the many brides who’ve dreamt about your wedding dress for a long, long time? It can be one of the most anticipated parts of the wedding planning experience. Here, we provide 10 important things to consider as you begin your hunt for that perfect wedding dress!

1. Ask friends and family for salon consultant recommendations.

You may feel more comfortable starting with someone with who you know your friends or family already had a good experience. Dress shopping is an important experience and you want it to be as comfortable and positive as possible!

2. Wedding Dress Shopping Tip – Make an appointment.

Try to make your appointment on a weekday when the boutiques tend to be not as busy.  This way you won’t feel rushed and can truly enjoy the entire experience. Making an appointment may not be essential if you just want to browse, but very important if you plan on trying on and buying the perfect dress!

 3. Wedding Dress Shopping Tips – Don’t bring a lot of people with you.

Start with 1 or 2 of your closest friends and family members.  The more people there, the more opinions you will hear. Due to COVID-19, many boutiques are limiting the amount of people who can join you while dress shopping. Be sure to call the boutique ahead of time and find out their regulations.

4. Know your budget and be careful of hidden costs.

There is nothing worse than falling in love with a dress that is out of budget! Tell your wedding dress consultant your price when you arrive at the boutique. Remember that accessories and major alterations can really add up!

5. Wedding Dress Tips – Start early.

Undoubtedly most dresses will take about 6-8 months to come in before you can start having fittings.  You don’t want to fall in love with a dress that you can’t get because there isn’t enough time. We certainly recommend that you start your wedding gown search 10 months prior to your wedding date. This will give you plenty of time to research, try on and buy the perfect dress!

6. Salons will sometimes take requests.

The boutique may not carry a certain brand, but they may still be able to order it for you. Make sure to do your research on brands prior to your appointment date and show your consultant plenty of pictures. They can either order you the dress of your dreams or find you one extremely similar.

7. Undergarments are not super important for your dress search.

Additionally you do not need to bring undergarments to your dress appointment. However, if you have certain undergarments that make you feel great, wear them so you know you’ll be comfortable in anything you put over them. Once you purchase your dress, bring your undergarments to your alterations fitting.

8. Bring a pair of heels you think will be the height you’d like to wear for the wedding.

A pair of heels will elevate your gown shopping experience. Certainly the heels don’t have to be the exact shoes you plan on wearing at your wedding, but they should be a similar height. If you chose not to bring a pair of shoes, many salons have a pair of heels that you can try on with your gown.

9. Sample sales?

Lastly don’t go to the sample sale on day 1 because you won’t be able to enjoy the moment with all of the craziness and crowds. The experience may feel rushed due to the nature of a sample sale. Day 2 tends to be a lot less crazy and will give you a good chance to really sort through the dresses and find the one you love.

10. Don’t get overwhelmed or discouraged.

Your perfect dress is out there and is waiting for you! Keep scheduling appointments at various dress boutiques and try on dresses outside of your comfort zone. Surprisingly you may be shocked by how much you love a dress that wasn’t the style you had in mind or wasn’t on your Pinterest board!  For more advice on wedding dress shopping and wedding planning, contact our Bradford Estate wedding team today!  Written by Alexandra Guarino Wedding Dress Inspo click here!
