Now that you’ve decided on your new name, here’s a step-by-step guide to making it official.

Obtain Your Marriage Certificate

For New Jersey couples you will need to schedule an appointment to apply for a marriage license in the municipality in which either party resides. This can be done up to 6 months in advance and at a minimum of 72 hours prior to your special date. There is a required 72-hour waiting period before your marriage license can be issued, so remember to leave enough time to receive your license prior to your wedding date. On the application, you will need to provide the municipality you plan to be married in. Please inquire within the registrar’s office for further information.

For out-of-state couples, you will need to schedule an appointment to apply for a marriage license in the municipality you plan to be married. This can be done up to 6 months in advance and at a minimum of 72 hours prior to your special date. Keep in mind, when applying you will need to bring a witness with you and all parties must have proper identification. You must return the marriage license that was not used to the issuing municipality for their records.

Update Your Social Security Card

With your marriage certificate in hand, your next stop is the Social Security Administration (SSA). You’ll need to complete the SS-5 form, which is available on the SSA website. Submit the form along with your certified marriage certificate and your current Social Security card. This can be done by mail or in person at your local SSA office. Your new Social Security card should arrive within a few weeks.

Update Your Driver’s License

Next, head to your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to update your driver’s license. Most DMV’s do require you to make appointments for updating your driver’s license. Each state has slightly different requirements, but you’ll generally need your current driver’s license, your new Social Security card, and your marriage certificate. Check your state’s DMV website for specific instructions and any applicable fees. 

Update Your Passport

If you have a passport, you’ll need to update it with your new name. The process varies depending on how long you’ve had your current passport. If it’s been less than a year, you can usually update it for free using Form DS-5504. If it’s been longer, you’ll need Form DS-82 and may have to pay a renewal fee. Submit the form along with your current passport, a certified copy of your marriage certificate, and a passport photo. The updated passport will be mailed to you. Make sure to check the location you will be visiting as you may need to schedule an appointment. 

Notify Your Employer and Update Payroll Information

Inform your employer of your name change so they can update your payroll and tax information. This ensures that your paychecks and tax documents reflect your new name. Don’t forget to also update your email address and business cards if applicable.

Update Your Bank Accounts and Financial Institutions

Visit your bank to update your name on your accounts. Bring your new Social Security card, marriage certificate, and updated driver’s license. You’ll also need to update your name on credit cards, loans, and any other financial accounts. This can usually be done by visiting the institution in person or submitting a name change request online.

Notify Insurance Providers

Contact your health, auto, home, and any other insurance providers to update your name on your policies. This ensures that your coverage remains intact and that all documentation is correct. Some providers may require a copy of your marriage certificate.

Update Voter Registration

To update your voter registration, complete the necessary form for your state, which is typically available online. Submit the form along with a copy of your marriage certificate to ensure your new name is reflected in the voter rolls.

Notify Other Relevant Parties
